Events
  • General
Grace United Church has a number of regularly occurring events that take place at more or less the same dates each year.  These are described here.  There are also some special, one time, events which are noted in the Events Calendar.

  • Festival Market at Grace (Formerly The Farmers’ Market)
The Festival Market at Grace is held in the church hall and on the grounds surrounding the church building on the Saturday before Labour Day every year, from 7.30 am to about 3.30 pm.   This event has previously been known as the Farmer's Market and has been held on this day  since 1966.  It is our major annual fund-raising event.  It was originally designed to allow local farmers to sell produce to the public but over the years it has evolved to include a large garage sale, a “granny’s attic”, farm and garden produce, crafts, a jams and preserves table, a silent auction and a food tent serving pancake and sausage breakfasts and beef-on-a-bun lunches.  There is truly something for everyone!  Everyone in the community is invited and is encouraged to attend.  Musical entertainment is provided for much of the day.
In 2009 the Festival Market at Grace will be on Saturday, September 5.
  • Christmas bazaar
What church would be without its Christmas Bazaar put on by the ladies of the church - in our case the UCW.  This annual event in November features handicrafts, sewing, baked goods, jams and preserves, with everything having a decidedly Christmas spirit to it.

  • Week of Guided Prayer
The Week of Guided Prayer provides us with an opportunity to experience a retreat in the midst if our daily living. The focus is God's participation in our lives. The premise is that God communicates with us through prayer. This special week confirms the discipline of prayer in everyday existence. Grace United Church has hosted the Week of Guided Prayer for the last eleven years, usually around the Lenten period. The topic varies from year to year and the Scripture readings are chosen according to the topic. These materials are provided by the Week of Guided Prayer Network of Hamilton Conference of the United Church of Canada. We have shared with Retreatants from our four mainline churches, from Bahai and from the Mennonite community.
We invite you to consider exploring growth in your spiritual journey by participating in the Week of Guided Prayer. Planning is underway for The Week of Guided Prayer 2010 and dates and the theme will be posted soon.

  • Spring bazaar
The Spring bazaar of the UCW takes place takes place on the first Saturday in May each year.  It also features handicrafts, sewing, baked goods and jams and preserves but the emphasis at this bazaar is on the coming summertime.
This year the Spring Bazaar will be on Saturday May 6.

  • Chili supper
Every November we hold our very popular chili supper in the church hall.  The event is put on by volunteers from the congregation.  Although we can seat about 100 people at a time there is often a lineup to get a table and sometimes tickets sell out well before the event. But try to get a ticket - you won’t regret doing so.  Call the Church office at  (905) 468-4044.
  • Pancake supper
Each year on the Friday before Shrove Tuesday the Men’s Club provides a pancakes and sausage supper, with pie and coffee.  The meal is open to all the community at no charge although donations for Outreach are accepted.
  • Beef on a Bun
The other regularly scheduled dinner for the congregation and the community at large, is the Beef-on-a-Bun dinner held on a Friday evening April 17 from 5 to 7 pm.  Another group of volunteers put this event on, which is eagerly anticipated in the community.
  • Ham Dinner
Another event to look forward to is the Traditional Ham Dinner which will be held this year on February 6.
  • Community lunches
This monthly event during the winter is described under “Outreach”.
  • Pie days
Pie days are an internal event at Grace United Church but are so important to the life of the church that they are included here.  The local community keeps close attention on the dates so that they can order pies well ahead of the day of preparation.  There are three sets of Pie Days - for rhubarb pies in the spring, apple pies in the fall and meat pies during the winter.  Each set of Pie Days is several separate days, for preparation, making the pies and baking.  Grace United pies are very well known and appreciated by the community and the pies are always sold out in advance of the sale day.
